The Realm of Masters—Highlights from the Collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest

Shenzhen International Museum of Art

Location
Shenzhen, China
Duration
05/2026-08/2026

Five centuries of European painting, brought to Shenzhen. The Realm of Masters was presented at the Shenzhen International Museum of Art as part of its inaugural exhibition programme in 2026. Featuring 71 works from the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest, the exhibition gave local audiences the opportunity to encounter original paintings by major European artists close to home.

Works by Titian, Rubens, Monet and Renoir placed familiar names within a broader history of painting. A dedicated Hungarian section, including works by Mihály Munkácsy, extended that perspective beyond the best-known Western European schools.

Exhibition highlights

  • 71 works on loan from Budapest, spanning five centuries of European art.
  • Four sections tracing developments from the Renaissance and Baroque periods to more recent painting.
  • Original works by internationally recognised masters alongside a focused introduction to Hungarian painting.
  • An international loan exhibition within the new museum’s seven-exhibition opening programme.

Curatorial approach

The exhibition used a chronological structure to help visitors connect individual works with changes in artistic style and expression. Across its four sections, differences in subject matter, composition, colour and the treatment of light offered a route through several centuries of painting.

The Hungarian section added an important regional perspective. By placing these works alongside the wider European selection, the exhibition encouraged visitors to consider both shared artistic traditions and the distinct concerns of artists working in Hungary.

Delivering an international loan exhibition

Bringing valuable historic paintings to a newly opened venue required close coordination around transport, customs clearance and installation. Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported that the works had demanding requirements for temperature, humidity and cleanliness, while preparations had to be completed within a short installation period.

Customs support covered transit, on-site unpacking and exhibition supervision. The museum’s exhibition team credited early coordination and continuous follow-up with helping the show open as scheduled. These practical arrangements provided the foundation for presenting the loans to the public.

Audience response and project value

Local reporting recorded visitors’ appreciation of the opportunity to see original works by European masters in Shenzhen. One visitor, recently returned from Budapest, highlighted the rarity of encountering such paintings locally and expressed a wish for more international exhibitions in the city.

As part of the museum’s opening programme, The Realm of Masters connected an established European collection with a new audience in the Greater Bay Area. Its value lay in combining direct access to original works with an accessible historical structure, creating opportunities for close looking, art education and cultural exchange.
